Share my Diabetic Sample Diet for a Typical High Fiber Complex Carbohydrate Antioxidant-rich Breakfast

You would want a diabetic sample diet because (a) you want to know how to prepare meals that help control diabetes, (b) you're looking for ideas on diabetic meal preparation, (c) you want to control your diabetes by eating the right foods. For these and similar reasons, you will find my personal breakfast example very helpful.

There is no diabetic sample diet that will fit the needs of every diabetic, so this is not a list of items on a menu or food items in a meal. I'm actually showing a typical breakfast with explanations as to why certain foods are included. I usually prefer to follow the idiomatic counsel to teach a man to fish, so that you feed him for a lifetime rather than giving him a fish and only feeding him for a day. Sample diets are great, but it won't be very long before one will want to design and implement one's own menu.

Maybe you need more than just the description of a diabetic sample diet. This recommendation carries significant promise for weight control as well.

BACKGROUND: After being diagnosed type 2 diabetic, it took several months before I could eat a breakfast like this and not use medication for control. It requires a combination of approaches even when using medication. The more "natural control" one has, the less prescription medication you will need. Please note that people have come off insulin regimen in a couple weeks by reforming their diet, incorporating regular exercise, and improving their rest routine. In addition, some dietary supplements such as Milagro de la Selva diabetes tea can help to heighten your level of natural control. That particular supplement helped me lower my glucose level in 10 days.

A diabetic sample diet would normally include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. However, my anti-diabetes diet approach has helped me get rid of snacks - only 3 meals per day (I know others who go on two meals), but this will depend on the individual and their level of blood sugar control. So this is my anti-diabetes breakfast example. [Food items are in random order].

A sample diabetic diet that is high in antioxidants, fiber, and complex carbohydrates

diabetic-sample-diet : typical high carb breakfast

Breakfast example from an anti-diabetes diet:
high fiber, complex carb.

  • Fruits (blueberries, strawberries, mango) - I include high antioxidant foods in my meals. Diabetics especially need foods high in antioxidants for repair of damaged tissues. The rates of wear and tear which lead to organ failures in diabetics are higher than in other people so ensuring you get enough antioxidants in your diet is key.
  • Food supplement - I use a fucoidan-rich seaweed supplement quite frequently as well as Milagro de la Selva tea. I drink 1 cup of this tea approximately 30 minutes before each meal to effectively control my diabetes. The producers say it does not interfere with any known medication **and** I have not had any contraindications with it, so this is good.
  • Oat bran cereal - Avoid those sugar coated cereals that are geared towards captivating kids' tastes. They are counterproductive to any weight control efforts and only make blood sugar control worse. I found that whole oats is better than regular oats. In general, the less processing put into preparing and preserving the food, the better it is for us.
  • Source of Omega acids - I frequently use a healthy mix of ground seeds with my cereal. Most often this includes 3 or 4 of these: flax seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and brewer's yeast flakes. The pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, and sesame seeds are especially vital.
  • Soy milk - since I do not use animal products, my cereal comes with soy. It's always zero-cholesterol and low-fat. [Technically, I am not really vegan - I'm more of a "total vegetarian" than vegan.]
  • 100% whole wheat bread - Whole grain foods are much more healthy and better for diabetics. Not only because there are more nutrients per unit weight, but because of the fiber content as well.
  • Soy cheese - Another soy product. Could also be nut butter, e.g. peanut butter, which I like very much.
  • Cooked Spinach - Got to get some green in there. Variations on this include steamed cabbage, or a bowl of salad - yes, for breakfast!

This diabetic sample diet example is **NOT** based on a calorie counting scheme. It is not presented as a recipe (per se). I really want to emphasize nutritive information and the need for making wholesome food choices in the diet of diabetics.

This sample diabetic diet holds up the anti-diabetes diet concept. The anti-diabetes diet and lifestyle principle is a comprehensive approach to naturally controlling blood sugar. Note that this is my breakfast example and it goes with a regular exercise program, getting adequate sleep each night, and generally observing good health principles.

Counting calories was not a part of this preparation, so if you are on a low carbohydrate or calorie restricting diet without medication, note that this breakfast example may have increased calories. However if the quantities are not applicable to your situation, the food selections should still be suitable.

More Natural Control, Less Medication

In 2006, diabetes dollars spent on medication and other supplies account for approximately 15% of cost for health care in America. (Don't quote me, I heard it on the radio.) At any rate, that is a lot of money for providing buoyancy for the economy, but I have to keep me floating first.

* Far from what you would see in most diabetic sample diet presentations, I do not just a give a set of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Sooner or later you will get tired of those recipes. Instead, I am emphasizing diet principles that help you choose the right foods.

* Instead of restricting carbohydrates (carbs) in general, we need to restrict low fiber carbohydrates and processed foods. Choose high fiber complex carbohydrate foods such as 100% whole wheat bread (instead of white bread or partial whole wheat bread), brown rice instead of white rice.

This diabetic sample diet includes some of the healthiest foods

Someone wrote an article about the 10 healthiest foods, and that article has becom very popular. Although the pronouncement on these food items is subject to debate, it is noteworthy that my diabetic sample diet (breakfast) contains many of these items. The popular MayoClinic.com website and others carries the article as well. Even though the items on the "10 Healthiest Foods" list vary somewhat, take note that almost all the items are plantbased food items, i.e. items ready to be used almost as nature has prepared them.

It is important to know how foods affect blood sugar levels in diabetics, but moreso we need to be concerned about the foods that help precipitate the condition as well. There have been studies that show that dietary fat is more of a culprit in developing type 2 diabetes than carbohydrates. See The Cause of Type 2 Diabetes on this site - scroll down to the sub-topic University of Kentucky Experiment.

Today, I can share my diabetic sample diet that has worked for me, with the understanding that if you try it you must bear in mind that I exercise regularly, I get adequate high quality rest and I use Milagro de la Selva diabetes supplement occasionally. In addition, my diet is high fiber plant-based, and is needed for my high energy lifestyle. We don't need to be stopped by diabetes.

You will note that there are differences between the popular diabetic sample diet recommendations by other sources of information on dieting for diabetics and what works for me, but most others advocate the ADA's calorie restriction programs, but an aggressive anti-diabetes diet approach is healthier to me.

What is diabetes like?

Actually, diabetes is starvation, except that it occurs at the cell level. Individual cells are deprived of glucose and they eventually die.
