Controlling Diabetes With Diet and Moderate Exercise

Controlling diabetes with diet really works. I have been doing it for more than a year. My diabetic medication is no more!

Although it was tough in the beginning, I have found it to be the most rewarding change I have ever made regarding my health and lifestyle. It is simply amazing!

My doctor warned that I would have to be on medication and insulin if I never got my diabetes under control. In my early 40's, that was scary!

Regular diabetes diet doesn't work

Within a month after my diagnosis, my dietitian designed an eating plan for me. It was based on common diabetes diet guidelines recommended by the American Diabetes Association. It is also called the Exchange diet.

I was given an Exchange List for a 2100-calorie meal plan. It allowed me to have three meals a day and three snacks.

Take a look at it (then come back). You will see how I tried controlling my diabetes with diet based on the Exchange system.  I'll be waiting for you...

OK, you're back...

The meal plan you've seen there did not really take care of the problem. I started to think that controlling diabetes with diet and exercise alone was a waste of time. My A1c was still higher when I had my next check up.

My doctor warned that she would have to put me on medication or even insulin if I never got it under control.

My search for answers about dietary control of diabetes

I began to get really frustrated. Usually, I am a calm and quiet guy. Nothing bothers me much. But not this time. It felt like I was losing the battle of my life.

Everyday I would read anything I could find about diabetes. I wanted answers.

How did I get this disease at age 44? My parents don't have it. I ate the right things, or so I thought. In fact, I had considered myself a vegetarian for the past 16 years. I rarely got sick; not even the flu. Why did I come down with diabetes?

All along I thought I wasn't just controlling diabetes with diet, but preventing it.

But here I was, now trying to learn about a situation that I thought was foreign to my lifestyle. Something must be wrong, and I had to find what it was.

I noticed that none of my treatment providers spoke about reversing or curing the disease. In fact, my doctor told me that I would be diabetic for the rest of my life.

What encouragement!

At first, that did not shake my determination to kick this disease. But my confidence started to wane a bit. How could I ever get better when my A1c climbed higher on every visit to the doctor?

Would dietary control ever work for me?

After three office visits and my A1c climbing constantly, my doctor decided I had to take medication.

The Fortamet (metformin) made me sick. The symptoms were to last for a short time but I grew weak. I had been having diarrhea for too long.

I intensified my quest for a better solution and I came across a program called, "Health by Choice, Not by Chance".

Controlling diabetes with diet took on a new meaning. It called for radical dietary changes... and it worked.

Even though my doctor had cut my medication dosage in half, I still experienced the side effects.

Controlling diabetes with diet and exercise really works if...

You have the right diet and you work to remove the conditions that caused the diabetic condition in the first place.

Controlling diabetes with diet
includes the use of fresh fruits.

I learned that my 31% fat diet was not going to work. In fact, I changed to a very high fiber carbohydrate low fat diet. On this program, I ate three meals per day and no snacks.

My largest meal is breakfast, and dinner is the smallest. Since my meals are loaded with dietary fiber, I do not go hungry easily. Even six hours after breakfast I still have energy to keep going. No hypos! The results have been so amazing, I cannot keep my mouth shut.

If you have type 2 diabetes, you can take control of your health, instead of just trying to control the symptoms of this serious debilitating and degenerative disease.
